For people who don't live

For people who don't live in NYC, it's hard to describe just how bad the local radio scene actually is. There are so many people in and around the city that there's more than enough support for two or three stations with basically the same format. This -- combined with the overall consilidation, corporatization and homoginization of the radio business in general -- has led to an ugly situation where you just can't find any variety on the dial and there are some formats that just don't exist at all (college radio excluded, but there are so many colleges in this area and so few frequencies available, that the stations that are out there are mostly weakly powered). At least in smaller cities, there's only enough population to truly support one station of each format, so there's more incentive to do something "different".

It's interesting to note this story from the NY Times then: WNEW Cutting Talk Format to Focus on Free-Form Music. I sincerely hope this works. As someone who went to college and majored in Radio Broadcasting before radio became computerized, over-researched and bland as Velveeta on Wonder Bread, the concept of a DJ actually picking their own music was not revolutionary...it was the way it was done. Yes, Virginia, there actually was a time when a DJ could insert their own personality (it may be little known, but this is the origin of the ancient term "On-Air Personality") into their show. Maybe this is a little opening that can bring some of that old radio magic back? I'm not getting my hopes up....

According to this link over

According to this link over at BoingBoing, Disney's evocation of France in Epcot Center is so effective, some rowdy visitors are voicing their opinion of France's foreign policy positions. Really now, people....let's pull ourselves together.

When you spend all day

When you spend all day on the Internet, it's hard to remember that most people in the world do not get our inside jokes...

Police in Sturgis, Michigan have arrested seven people for posting signs around the city on April fools day which read "All your base are belong to us!" The local police chief, obviously not in on the joke, had this to say: "This is no joking matter. During a time of war and with the present concern for homeland security, terrorist acts will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law." Link

Thanks to help from the

Thanks to help from the indefatiguable (I've always wanted to use that word!) Jacob, Medpundit now has an RSS Feed. That's fantastic. When I started this blog only a few months ago, it seemed like there was a small group of troopers out there who made up the Medical Blog world. Now, it's growing every day and I see us helping each other out constantly. It's just so very cool.

Medscape hasn't yet found it's

Medscape hasn't yet found it's "on the scene" doc to give us a feel for what it's like in the Middle East right now, but we have posted this pretty interesting two part interview:

Who provides vital medical support to troops advancing through Iraq into Baghdad? What type of training do they receive, and how are they organized? Read part 1 and part 2 of our interview with Col. Cliff Cloonan, MD, chairman of the military medical school at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland.

Still looking for someone to give a doc perspective "view from the front lines" if possible. Let me know if you have a contact.
